It is one of the three maxims that was inscribed on the Temple of Apollo in Delphi and attributed to the sages of Greece by Plato and many other writers and philosophers.
It is our goal, duty and beacon in an ever challenging world, to become aware of ourselves and by doing so making our journey less of a chore and paddling without getting nowhere and more of a smooth sail towards matters that really mean something to us. Or not- who knows?
In my experience, here are 5 things I’ve found to be useful when it comes to discovering myself as a human being and making my life easier by doing so.
I’ve also put the best resources I’ve come up with so far, in making them easy to grasp at once.
1. Your Personality Type
Personality typing can be a whole lot of complicated mess and at times downright pseudoscience; but as with other doors opening to our psyche, these methods are still worth exploring.
Myers and Briggs, deriving from Carl Jung’s work based their system on “cognitive functions” and how we prefer to use them dominantly , secondarily…
- Thinking
- Feeling
- Sensing
- Intuition
-
- with the preferences of Perceiving or Judging
- in Introverted or Extroverted forms.
It could be an eye opening experience for you to discover not only why or how you interpret a specific event in the way you do, but also how other people’s cognitive preferences affect their perceptions for that same event.
Completely different at times, right?
After realizing the workings of these functions, many things that don’t really make sense about other people’s reactions will start making sense and it will be easier to understand everyone on a much profound level and find common ground with them.
More importantly, your value systems and how you function in life will be more clear, allowing yourself to make decisions more aligned with yourself in essence.
Enneagrams are also useful.
To find out more:
- Google “Myers Briggs” or “MBTI” and find a free test that you like. Here is an example.
- Find out what those letters mean and on this channel you may find some fun sketches about the MBTI types. I had to listen to it a few times before it started making sense, it’s a bit elaborate I have to admit.

- Check out the personality characters of some fictional people such as, the Winchester Brothers or Calvin and Hobbes, because why not.
2. Your Body Type
I’ve already posted an article on this subject, here is the link.
Basically, what looks good on you is closely related to the proportions of yin and yang features you possess on your body . Yin is more female, round, soft and yang is more angular, sharp. If you are tall and slender, that long straight line that strikes us at first glance is very yang, so it is very likely you are closer to the yang spectrum such as “Dramatic”. If you are short and round, including your face and your extremities, then with all probability you are closer to yin end of the spectrum which is “Romantic”. If you are dramatic for instance masculine outfits look really natural on you (think Tilda Swinton) vs for a romantic, more feminine outfits look flattering (think Marilyn Monroe). Gamine is more definite masculine features balanced with feminine aspects, but not very tall (think Audrey Hepburn). Natural and classical body types are more proportionate and symmetric (think supermodels or athletic people).
Please google “Kibbe Body Type” for taking the test. Here is a really tried and true example.
Aly Art on YouTube does a fantastic job exploring this topic, also providing some outfit ideas and celebrity analysis, mainly for women.
3. Your Colour Scheme
There is a reason why some colors look good on you vs you look like a corpse. It’s got to do with some aspects of your skin tone, such as your undertone (cool or warm), your level of contrasts and grey presence as a whole. At the end you end up with a season and a variation of it, such as Cool Summer or Soft Autumn. The general idea is that:
- Warm: Spring or Autumn (gold looks better on you than silver)
- Cool: Winter or Summer (silver looks better on you than gold)
My suggestion is that don’t change your hair color without having this info.
You may also reverse engineer for this specific analysis. It is debated that the colours you like or already look good on you are the ones that belongs to that type. Here are some detailed explanations.
You may also search on google “Seasonal Colour Analysis” for more resources.
4. Your Birth Chart
I suggest reading both (western) and Sidereal (Vedic) versions of your birth chart. You need your birth date, time and place to obtain a chart. If you are not sure of the time, enter an approximate time, but bear in mind that your ascendant and house explanations could be wrong- they change nearly every two hours and are sort of important.
5. How your body functions
Dr. Mindy Pelz explains the relationship between our body functions and our relationship with food in such an easy, yet intricate manner and her resources are too good to be true. A definite go to, especially for women during their transitional hormonal changes or with autoimmune reactions. Her recent book “Fast Like a Girl” is definitely on my To-Read list. Applies for men, too 😉
Check with your doctor if you have any pre-existing health issues.
